Review: Overfalls

Title: Overfalls (Wave Two, The Merworld Water Wars Series)
Author: Sutton Shields
My Rating: 5 conch
Source: Purchased
By At: Amazon

Summary from Goodreads:
Unlike most high school seniors, Marina Valentine isn’t sweating college (she’s outlawed from even applying), the prom (she has her dream date…possibly), or graduation (though surviving to rock the ill-fitting gown is iffy). No, she’s a little preoccupied with succeeding as a walking myth post-graduation. So, when Marina awakens as the one and only Siren Savior, she thinks the tide is about to turn on the merbitch’s mer-psycho family. Unfortunately, she has issues with her flighty Savior powers, and the timing couldn’t be worse. For with the arrival of a feared foe, comes the promise of a disastrous year…and that’s an understatement.

For years, mythological beings have awaited the fulfillment of a mysterious prophecy involving Merpeople, Normals, an epic clash, and a wish that could forever change one group’s destiny. But the real trouble begins when an assassin known as The Dealer starts sending her cryptic messages written on potentially lethal playing cards.

The Dealer makes one thing very clear: someone Marina loves will die. Now, she must find The Dealer before he (or she) finds his victim. But with everyone either a suspect or a target, how will Marina be able to uncover the truth before time runs out?

Not even the Siren Savior in all her power can prepare for the devastating answers.

The Review:
Another FABULOUS read by Sutton! Overfalls gave me the opportunity to get to know all of the crazy (crazy in a good way) characters we met in Finned, and I am so happy for that. Mariana is dealing with the typical teen problems. You know, like boys, friends, the school's queen bee, and of course, figuring out how to save them all. In a competition putting the normals squarely against the merps, friendships are tested and Sutton does a great job of building the tension. There's non-stop action and snark and realistic dialogue between a group of supernaturally talented friends all with their own quirks. I really enjoyed getting to see more of the underwater merp world in this book, and again, I am blown away by the imagination. There are such great descriptions that will totally suck you in (like the toystore!). And the end...whew. There's a lot going on and even though I'm a fan of cliffhangers, I really, REALLY can't wait to see where this story is going. Like CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER, SUTTON! Someone dies. Someone is discovered. And there's no doubt that the story will only get better from here. This is a MUST READ series! I promise you that it will be money (and time) well spent!

The Good: Even more character development in this one and a chance to see all of my favorites working/fighting together. Yep, Jex, I'm talking about you! Thanks for showing up to the party!

The Issue: More. I wanted more. NOW.

The Rating: Five conch. A fabulous second book to a series that is now one of my top favorites!
